St. Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon in 1195 and died in Padua 13th June 1231.

Praying to St. Anthony is a tradition that goes back to an incident in the Saint's own life. When his prayer book which was full of his sermons was stolen, he prayed that it would be found or returned. Eventually it was returned. In 1890 Louise Bouffier promised loaves of bread for the poor if St. Anthony helped with opening of a broken lock of her shop in the French town of Toulon. St. Anthony helped and St. Anthony's bread was given to the needy. It is said that almsgiving with the invocation of St. Anthony, goes back to an incident, again in his own lifetime when a child was drowned and the mother sought the help of St. Anthony, promising a donation of grain for the poor.
