Pastoral Council: Meeting tomorrow night Mon the 12th Feb at 8:30pm in Drumavaddy.

The Word Lent. The word Lent itself means “Lengthening spring days” and it became a spiritual journey of 40 days to help people focus on the upcoming feast of Easter. The 40 days were easily connected with the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert and of course the 40 years the Jews wandered in the wilderness after they emerged from Egypt. The biggest form of denial was no meat of any kind, not even the lard. This gave rise to the custom of using up all animal fats on the eve of Ash Wednesday and the tradition of pancake making. In Mediterranean countries they call the Tuesday “Mardi Gras” and they celebrated what we now know as a Carnival (farewell to meat). The purpose of fasting in the context of Lent is to help us realize how dependent we are on food, alcohol, gossip and having identified this, we ought to free ourselves from this dependency.

Prayer to St. Valentine.

O glorious advocate and Protector St. Valentine. Look with pity upon our wants.

Hear our requests. Attend to our prayers.

Relieve by your intercession the miseries under which we labour, and obtain for

us the Divine Blessing that we may be found worthy to join you in praising the Almighty for all eternity. Through the merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

St. Valentine's Day: This initiative is inspiring by The Joy of Love, a letter from Pope Francis to the world, where he emphasises the fundamental importance of time together and personal communication as foundations for a love that lasts.

As part of the Preparation for the World Meeting of Families, an opportunity to talk

and reflect about family life will be offered in three locations in our diocese on a particular Saturday in Lent. We are calling this time of reflection- Let's Talk Family. To learn more about it please come along to an introductory evening on Wednesday 7th February in the Pastoral Centre, Cavan at 7pm.

Entrance Hymn:

                             Amazing Grace.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound        T’was grace that taught my heart to fear,

that saved a wretch like me.                    and grace my fears relieved.

I once was lost but now I’m found,                        How precious did that grace appear

was blind, but now I see.                          the hour I first believed.

                             Father we adore you.

Father, we adore you.                              Jesus, we adore you.

Lay our lives before you.                            Lay our lives before you.

How we love you.                                     How we love you.

                              Be Still and Know.

Be still and know that I am God.               In thee, O Lord, I put my trust,

Be still and know that I am God,               In thee, O Lord, I put my trust,

Be still and know that I am God.               In thee, O Lord, I put my trust.

I am the Lord that healeth thee,

I am the Lord that healeth thee,

I am the Lord that healeth thee.

                              Bind us Together.

Bind us together, Lord bind us together.   There is only one God.

With cords that cannot be broken            .           There is only one King.

Bind us together, Lord bind us together.   There is only one body.

Lord, bind us together with love.             That is why we can sing.
