Today's Gospel.

John is speaking to the crowds at a place called Bethabara which means the "house at the crossing". The crossing was the crossing of the river Jordan. It was located at 1000 feet below sea level and for most of the year it was baked by the sun at 100 degrees. It would not have been an attractive place for the casual follower so those who came out from Jerusalem would have been committed followers. When John saw Jesus coming towards him he declared there is the lamb of God. Those listening to John knew why he used those words, because every Passover 256,000 lambs were slaughtered to take away the sins of the Jewish people.
