The Cat of Nine Tails.

When Jesus was whipped with the cat of nine tails he would have lost a lot of blood and the struggle to carry the cross to Calvary would virtually have drained him of blood. So when the soldier drove the spear inward between the 5th and 6th rib it went through the pleura and the thin part of the lung and stopped in the pericardium. The right auricle of the human heart holds liquid blood after death and the outer sac holds a serum called hydropericardium. When the soldier withdrew the spear, blood and water were seen to emerge and run down the body of Jesus.
