The Romans.

The Romans worshipped the sun for obvious reasons as their good climate

guaranteed good quality food. In 274 A.D. the Emperor Aurelian instituted the

cult of SOL INVICTUS The unconquered sun. He did this to try to stop the

expansion of the new religion, Christianity. For generations the Romans were

aware of the annual shortening of the days from mid September until 21st of

December, when each day afterwards there was a slight increase in day light.

By December 25th there was an obvious increase in daylight and so they

observed a feast day on December 25th. The Catholic Church used this

celebration to honour the birth of Christ and proclaimed December 25th as the

birthday of Jesus in the year 336 A.D, and so Jesus becomes the light of the

world (John Ch 1:5).
