John the
Baptist: 29th of August the beheading of
John the Baptist is commemorated. Flavius Joseph was governor of Galilee at the
outbreak of the Jewish War with Rome in 66AD and he remembers that Herod
executed John because he was afraid of the Baptists enormous popularity among
the people. According to Flavius Josephus when the ordinary people gathered to
hear John their excitement reached fever pitch and Herod began to feel very ill
at ease least this enthusiasm would lead to some revolt. So because of Herod's
suspicion John was sent to the fortress of Machaerus to await execution.

And be glad in it, and be glad in it.
