Ash Wednesday:- day of fast & abstinence, three meals and no meat.

The word Lent.

The word Lent itself means “Lengthening spring days” and it became a spiritual journey of 40 days to help people focus on the upcoming feast of Easter. The 40 days was easily connected with the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert and of course the 40 years the Jews wandered in the wilderness after they emerged from Egypt. The biggest form of denial was no meat of any kind, not even the lard. This gave rise to the custom of using up all animal fats on the eve of Ash Wednesday and the tradition of pancake making. In Mediterranean countries they call the Tuesday “Mardi Gras” and they celebrated what we now know as a Carnival (farewell to meat). The purpose of fasting in the context of Lent is to help us realize how dependent we are on food, alcohol, gossip and having identified this, we ought to free ourselves from this dependency.

I once was lost but now I’m found,                     How precious did that grace appear
