St. Mark's Gospel:

This year we read St. Mark's gospel which was the first gospel to be written down. The vast majority of the people living in the time of St. Mark 70 A.D. could not read, in fact only one in ten could do so. Generally information was passed on by word of mouth. For hundreds of years there would have been few copies of the New Testament because books were very expensive for the simple reason that the books were written on vellum made from the skin of sheep. It took a monk three years to put New Testament on the sheep skin and it took 900 hides to contain the full narrative. This all changed with the discovery of the printing press in the 15th century and then bibles became available to all. Mark was "The Secretary" of Peter so will reflect Peter's understanding of Jesus.

St. Valentine's Day: This initiative is inspiring by The Joy of Love, a letter from Pope Francis to the world, where he emphasises the fundamental importance of time together and personal communication as foundations for a love that lasts.

As part of the Preparation for the World Meeting of Families, an opportunity to talk

and reflect about family life will be offered in three locations in our diocese on a particular Saturday in Lent. We are calling this time of reflection- Let's Talk Family. To learn more about it please come along to an introductory evening on Wednesday 7th February in the Pastoral Centre, Cavan at 7pm. Given that St. Valentine's Day falls this year on Ash Wednesday this is a good year to think outside the chocolate box!

Denn Running Club: Every Tuesday & Thursday at 8pm. Run, walk or jog with your community: €2 per night per adult and €1 per child. All proceeds go to Denn Juveniles. Come along this week, no obligation to pay while you decide if this is for you.
